How to Perform
Ashtanga thrives on consistency, ideally in the morning to harness its invigorating energy before the day begins. Each session, ideally 60-120 minutes, is a profound moving meditation that gradually builds incredible strength and flexibility. Step-by-Step Guide
Find a quiet space with enough room to move. Begin your practice by completing several rounds of Surya Namaskara A (Sun Salutation A) to warm up your body.
Throughout the practice, maintain Ujjayi breath. This involves deep, audible breathing through your nose, creating a soft oceanic sound by gently constricting the back of your throat.
Synchronize each movement with either an inhale or an exhale. For example, inhale as you raise your arms, and exhale as you fold forward. This coordinated breath and movement is known as vinyasa.
For each posture (asana), direct your gaze (drishti) to a specific point, such as your big toe, the tip of your nose, or your navel. This helps to enhance focus and mental concentration.
Engage your internal energy locks (bandhas): Mula Bandha (root lock) and Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock). These provide core support, stability, and help direct energy throughout your practice.
Proceed through the fixed sequence, typically starting with standing postures (e.g., from the Primary Series), and follow the established order. Listen to your body and modify or rest as needed, especially if new to Ashtanga.
